The European Hypersonic Defence Interceptor” (EU HYDEF) is a project co-funded by the European Union, under the European Defence Fund, and Belgium, Germany, Norway, Poland and Spain. OCCAR has been entrusted the management of the EU HYDEF project by the European Commission (EC) and the Participating States.
Between April 24 and 25, 2024, the HYDEF (HYpersonic DEFence) program reached an important technical milestone. The HYDEF Mission Concept Milestone (MCM) and the first Progress Review Meeting (PRM1) took place at Diehl Defence in Überlingen, Germany. Participants from HYDEF Consortium companies from five EU countries represented the HYDEF consortium with OCCAR (Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation) as reviewers of the milestone documents. The event was organised by Diehl Defence and Sistemas de Misiles de España (SMS), chaired by OCCAR.
The MCM is the first technical milestone of the HYDEF program and demonstrates the high technical performance of the consortium. During the meeting, the consortium presented OCCAR its achievements of the last months. The OCCAR confirmed all results and the MCM and PRM1 were passed, and all technical objectives were very successfully achieved.
This milestone marks a further step in European cooperation in the development of an interceptor as part of an integrated air and missile defence system architecture capable of neutralising emerging and highly sophisticated hypersonic threats in the coming decades. The consortium, in particular SMS and Diehl Defence, were commended by OCCAR for its professional work and performance. The next major HYDEF event is a third stakeholder workshop which will take place in Überlingen with representatives from the ministries of defence of several EU member states in mid-2024.
HYDEF is financed by the European Defense Fund (EDF) and the EU Member States and managed by OCCAR. The HYDEF consortium is led by SMS, which is responsible for project management, and Diehl Defence, which is responsible for the technical part. The entire HYDEF consortium consists of 14 companies from 7 European countries. HYDEF started with the signing of the contract between OCCAR and SMS for the HYDEF interceptor concept study programme in November 2023. The HYDEF programme is a unique opportunity for Europe to develop a state-of-the-art hypersonic defence capability to secure European airspace and neutralize hypersonic threats.
