Sistemas de Misiles de España (SMS) has reached an agreement with the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) to carry out the modernisation of the launchers of the NASAMS air defence system, as part of the contract for the modernisation and upgrade of the NASAMS batteries to the 2+ version.
The NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) is a medium-range air defence system designed and manufactured by KONGSBERG and Raytheon. A standard NASAMS unit has a modular design comprising a command post, the Fire Distribution Centre (FDC), an active 3D radar Raytheon AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel, a passive electro-optical and infrared sensor and a number of missile canister launchers with AMRAAM missiles. The NASAMS is operated by users all over the world and is being tested in combat operations in Ukraine.
The NASAMS system was acquired by Spain in 2003. After more than twenty years in service, the Ministry of Defence recently launched a modernisation programme for its operational batteries.
As part of this programme, the Ministry of Defence agreed with KONGSBERG to refurbish and modernise the eight launchers of the NASAMS, activities in which SMS will now be directly involved.
Following instructions from KONGSBERG, as the design authority, SMS will carry out the necessary work to ensure that the launchers are in optimal condition for use by the end-user. SMS’ participation will also have a positive impact on the Spanish defence industrial network.
With the signing of this agreement, SMS reaffirms its position as the reference company in Spain in missile systems, including those activities related to the maintenance and sustainment of the life cycle of the systems.
SMS and KONGSBERG will continue to expand their cooperation in other areas of interest to the Spanish Armed Forces.
