History
Sistemas de Misiles de España (Spanish Missile Systems – SMS) was launched in September 2021 as a collaborative proposal of three of the most relevant companies in the defence technology sector in Spain, SENER AEROESPACIAL Y DEFENSA, ESCRIBANO MECHANICAL AND ENGINEERING and GMV, joined by INSTALAZA in February 2023.
The new partnership arises from the need to consolidate and strengthen national technological and industrial capabilities in missile systems, with the aim of providing the Spanish Armed Forces with the capabilities they require, supporting them in the most efficient way throughout the life cycle of weapons systems, promoting international cooperation and thus contributing to increase Spanish sovereignty and freedom of action.
In its still short life, SMS has raisedthe interest of the different stakeholders involved in the sector, who acknowledge the added value of stable and sustainable cooperation mechanisms at national and international level for the development and sustainment of advanced weapons systems.
MISSION
Contribute to the enhancement of the autonomy and national sovereignty
of the Spanish Armed Forces (FAS), bringing
together national technological and industrial capabilities in
missile systems.
VISION
To become the driving force for collaboration between national and international companies
and other public and private defence institutions,
in order to be in the best possible position to
providing solutions to the needs of the FAS in
precision guided weapons through technological innovation
and industrial cooperation.

OBJECTIVES
Contributing to the reduction of fragmentation and promoting the consolidation of national technological and industrial capabilities in missile systems and precision-guided weapons.
Promoting the participation of the Spanish defence industry in international missile programmes and systems.
Leading, as a driving force, the national private R&D&I initiative in defence related to missile systems, and contributing to the industrialisation of the country in areas of high technological content and added value.
Becoming a strategic partner of international companies to provide missile capabilities to the Spanish Armed Forces.
Providing close support to the Spanish Armed Forces throughout the life cycle of weapon systems, from concept definition to decommissioning.
Providing solutions based on proprietary and sovereign technology according to the needs of the National Defence.
SYSTEMS AND SUB-SYSTEMS MANUFACTURING
SMS, through its industrial shareholders (EM&E, GMV, INSTALAZA, SENER) and its supply chain, has accumulated extensive experience in producingsystems and subsystems that are part of missiles and their associated systems, both in the flight / efector segment (guidance, navigation, control, warheads, propulsion…) and in the ground / naval segment (sensors, support equipment, command and control systems…).
All these manufacturing capabilities are enhanced by being offered in an integrated way to both the Spanish Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces, as well as to international missile manufacturing companies, fulfilling SMS’ objective of consolidating national technological and industrial capabilities.
CAPABILITIES
DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MISSILES AND MISSILE SYSTEMS
SMS seeks to play a key role in national and international projects for the development of new missile systems, maximising and optimising the participation of Spanish industry.
This involves the search for R&D solutions and the development of new systems that respond to unmet needs or niche products with export potential. These proposals can be
articulated through national programmes or through the various international cooperation mechanisms.
On the international stage, it is worth highlighting the role of SMS as coordinator of the EU-HYDEF international consortium, a project co-financed by the European Defence Fund (EDF) and the Directorate General for Armaments and Material (DGAM) of the Spanish Ministry of Defence, which aims to develop the concept and technological maturity of a European interceptor against hypersonic threats.
LOGISTICAL SUPPORT DURING THE LIFE CYCLE
Another pillar of SMS’ value proposal is to provide local integrated logistics support to the Spanish Army and Navy logistic bodies throughout the life cycle of missiles and missile systems in their inventories, regardless of their origin. The aim is to maximise system operability, strengthen national industrial capabilities and rationalise the costs associated with sustainment, modernisation or integration into new platforms and weapon systems.
All these capabilities, especially for new systems being procured, need to be planned from the earliest stages of defining operational needs and executing procurement processes.
To this end, SMS works in close collaboration with international manufacturers of missile systems of interest to the Spanish Armed Forces to establish mechanisms for collaboration and industrial participation in projects that facilitate the establishment of Logistic Support Concepts (LSC) with broad participation of national industry and boosting the capabilities of the Spanish Armed Forces’ logistics units.
QUALITY
Information for suppliers
SISTEMAS DE MISILES DE ESPAÑA S.L. (SMS) has a Quality System according to which it evaluates, approves, and annually reevaluates its external suppliers, taking into consideration ISO certifications, regulatory compliance, delivery time compliance, specification compliance, and quality incident tracking (generally, exceeding a 2% incident rate is considered grounds for agreement review).
